Whales
- Ingo Raven (2000)
All
instruments played or programmed by IR
Backing vocals: Birgit Lübeck
This track was recorded digitally with the legendary tripleDAT program and a Creamware Scope system. All mixing and effects came from the Creamware system. My wife always loved this one most so I tried to make a decent recording as a surprise for her birthday.
Instruments:
The bass was a noname bass.
The picking guitar and the distorted guitar in the verses were one of my Strats, can't remember which one, maybe over a '65 Super Reverb I had for a short time. The chorus was from the tripleDAT software, one of the greatest chorus effects I have ever worked with. It is also doubled - not with a delay, instead I copied the track and put it to a second track, slightly pushed back on the time axis.
The lead guitar in the outro was a '74 Les Paul over my self-built Tweed princeton clone (wth an old Jensen ceramic 10" speaker). That fat sound resulted from cranking up this 6 watts monster and using a compressor from the Scope system with the right settings.
The drums were created from single drum samples which I put into the grid of the tripleDAT HDR software.
You can hear a track with singing whales and wave sounds of the ocean from a nature CD. This track runs throughout the whole song, it is always there and the whales and those water sounds come in randomly (or following whichever pattern they use for their singing). This creates a good part of song's mood.
The synths were a soft synth from the Scope system with the reverb cranked up, and a digital pad sample that causes that ZZzzz... sound that interacts nicely with the distorted guitar.
